Today is the day we all sit down and watch the badassery of chrome robots, Robert Patrick, savory one liners and problem solving via loads of bullets. Cei and I started this tradition on this very day six years ago. Originally it was suggested as a holiday alternative. As it turned out,  every yearly suggestion of viewing was favorable. Eventually this became tradition. Funny how those things keep.

So in this seventh year of celebration, grab a friend, sweetie or a really loud stereo system and enjoy watching <3

I’m honestly a latecomer by standards of the comic’s running time (discovered around 2010 ), so I want to do my part as a fan during this window of time.

Starslip has always stood out to me as a curious type of webcomic in that it never entirely stays put in one genre, and yet I wouldn’t want to define either. Although its sci-fi scene is naturally prominent, its humor and tone is not something generally expected. It isn’t a jarring anti-thesis to common convention either, granted Straub has mentioned in Webcomics Weekly the painstaking efforts to avoid predictable story lines early on. Its certainly sarcastic, but not too  much as to dissolve any interest in its characters and their own respective developments. At the same time character investment is very careful in order not to break its own comical air. What I’m saying is its unique. Particular even. And very enjoyable to read. The series has also been very motivational by representing the free venturing that can be accomplished via self-publication.

I also feel Starslip remains as a consistent webcomic in its content. To the point, its always been entertaining regardless of the risks or new ground it wandered into. It is what it is and that’s as it should be.

I remember in an interview about Red Dwarf, Naylor and Grant were told to be absolutely crazy for attempting to combine science fiction and comedy. Its not easy. Not only do you have to define otherworldly material and a new codex of nuances, but you have to be able to turn these made-up elements on their own head. But understanding comedic timing and being able to laugh at one’s own universe is what makes this kind of material so effective. Likewise in the same stroke, presenting enough character to the table that you value  their efforts and hope for the best for them (unless you’re Quine).

No one wants to see something they enjoy end, but considering its run this countdown is very understandable. After all, a good end is better than a bad prolonging. I’m just glad that the creator has the ability to make this choice period.

I also really look forward to a kick-ass book collection to add to my library. And further additions of Mr.Jinx wearing cute headgear.

Updates may only be once a week, but I’m surprised how fast things seem to be going.

This page was a real highlight for me. Absolutely love it.

// I will be participating in this event. As example I’ve canceled my ME3 pre-order, and will re-order the game come April.

I truly encourage anyone who happens across this blog to participate. This is something in your power. Something that has always been in your power. I feel that frustrations with the entertainment industry have been due to resisting current change plus the exploitation of nostalgia of 30 year-olds who now have family, worries and namely money. But your dollar has always made the greatest impact to what gets made. How you spend it is important. The internet is the entertainment industry’s greatest concern because it gives you trial before error. We are being restrained by an old business model that no longer applies to this day and age. You shouldn’t settle for it.  They want you to.You certainly shouldn’t be prosecuted either.They are doing their damnest to do so. These businesses have no right of dictation over free-speech and usage of information. Do not let them. You can make a difference.

Isn’t this a time we’re we need to save and prepare for the worst?  Hell, call this “hardcore budget” month if you have to.

As an aside, its so damn tiring that every venture into entertainment feels like a risk rather than an adventure.  Plenty has  revealed to be disappointing or certainly not worth the effort. Its made me thankful for finding the information beforehand ala internet; reviews, posts and previews. Certainly when some releases suggest that “you can grow out of autism” or are so inconsistently non-canon in an otherwise canon-related product that you question the company’s quality control, you really wonder if you’re buying anything of worth anymore. (This guy also wrote The Flood for the Halo series, which should have been the biggest red light of them all. I would rather have Goto’s multilaser all over the place).

My opinion? Bring some damn power back into your dollar. Hit them right where it hurts and where all their decisions stem from.

Stop companies from controlling access to information. Do something about it.

// With the update of The Thing on the Doorstep – Part 2, HPPODCRAFT celebrates its 100th episode! They have a mighty tip of my hat for progressing through Lovecraft’s works for this long. Their podcast is a delight to listen to, and has surveyed quite a lot of material I would have otherwise missed (namely the team ups). I will sorely miss them when we come to the last story.
